Trying to overcome your shiny object syndrome is keeping you stuck

I understand you’ve been told your whole life that, you “just need to focus”, “its all in the follow through,” and to “do one thing at a time”.  You probably feel like those who are successful are better at completion and staying on task than you.

Let me ask you.  Do you think all successful entrepreneurs actually stop their shiny object syndrome?  Clearly visionaries and true entrepreneurial spirits are flooded with new ideas & exciting distractions regularly.

Instead of expecting yourself to shut off this part of you, embrace that this creativity is a huge strength.  When we put all of our energy into self-shaming inner dialouge like “I never follow through”, “I keep getting distracted”, “I can never find uninterrupted time” - this becomes our reality.  Instead, focus on creating small wins regularly and celebrate each tiny step.  Those results will have a compound effect. Combine this with delegating the draining parts of the work you are being distracted away from to someone who has that strength.  This way, you can get back to the part of your work that you love.

When you go against the grain and try to focus and follow through on things that drain you vs. light a fire under you, it is depleting.  Often times, you layer on guilt about how you aren’t successful at finishing. Which results in further depletion.

So let me ask you, would you like to continue that self-shaming spiral?  Or are you ready to embrace that your shiny object syndrome is an indication of your creative strength and stay in the visionary role?  To stay in idea generation and allow the ideas to flow through you and into a system where other team members can do the completing for you?
